Zürich has about 2,000 bars and restaurants. A famous Zürich dish is Zürigschnätzlets, veal in a cream and wine sauce, Wurst (sausages) are also popular usually served with boiled potatoes. Rösti is a potato pancake then fried until crisp, Spätzle are small noodle dumplings. Try traditional Swiss food in a former cowshed dating from the thirteenth century complete with folk music. Aelpli Bar on Anzengasse 5 (043 355 91 92) has live music each night enjoyed over a glass of famous Aelpli Milk. Crazy Cow on Leonhardstrasse 1 (044 261 40 55) has a zany feel with traditional Swiss cooking and live music at reasonable prices.

For a dedicated vegetarian restaurant visitors to Zurich will find House Hiltl on Sihlstrasse 28 (044 227 70 00) perfect for their needs and there is even a cookery school to discover new ways of cooking.

Dine with a backdrop of scenic mountain views by taking the Uetliberg railway to the Uto Kulm Restaurant at the top of the Uto Kulm Mountain (Gratstrasse (autofrei) 8143 Uetliberg/Zürich (044 457 66 66).

With a good range of traditional food this has to be one of the best places to come for a panoramic view of the Alps and the city of Zurich. Experience Bauhaus style architecture by eating in the famous Bauhaus Restaurant at Universitätstrasse 101 (044 360 12 00) where an excellent selection of seasonal and vegetarian cuisine is on the menu.

For simple food at reasonable prices try Restaurant bar Rosaly’s at Freieckgasse 7 (044 261 44 30) . With homemade specialties and good wines Rosaly’s is a charming place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. At Café Balthazar try the excellent Italian Bacio d’Amore coffee, treat yourself to delicious ice cream and cake in elegant surroundings. Find this delightful establishment on Bahnhofstrasse 104 (044 211 78 66).

On the shore of Lake Zurich the beer garden at Bauschänzli is a delightful place to spend a balmy summer evening. Set amongst beautiful lakeside views there are walks in the park, traditional Swiss food and live music. Find the restaurant at Stadthausquai 2 (044 212 49 19).

For a restaurant specializing in organic only produce visit Dörfli in the centre of the village of Uitikon, a 5 minute journey from the Triemli tram stop by bus or car. This restaurant on Zürcherstrasse 61 (044 491 95 10) has meat delivered by local farmers.

The Mövenpick Beefclub on Beethovenstrasse 32 is one of Zurich’s renowned restaurants, famed for its US prime rib beef. Seafood and salads are also on offer at this popular city restaurant (044 286 54 64).

At the Restaurant Belcanto relax on the terrace at the city Opera House and enjoy fine traditional food fresh from the market. Located on Theaterplatz 1 (044 268 64 64) this is convenient for those planning a visit to a concert.

For visiting chocoholics the exquisite décor in the confectionery shops will not have escaped attention. Find some of the most elegant and eye catching displays of delicious chocolate at Elisabetta Capei on Schlüssel-Gasse 12 (043 539 18 85).

Zurich has so many places to experience fine traditional cuisine that sometimes the only problem will be deciding where to eat.

Kronenhalle Restaurant
Kronenhalle is reputably one of the top restaurants in Zurich . It is decorated in a luxurious classic style. The staff is very courteous and serves excellent meals. It's an expensive place but you'll get out very satisfied. Rämistrasse 4, 044 262 99 00

Zuppamundial is a very popular restaurant placed in the Tribeca area. It is decorated with Asian artefacts and serves food from all over the world. The wine selection is also very good. Giessereistrasse 18, 043 818 2391

Café Schober
This café opened in 1836. It serves the most delicious hot chocolate in the world. Made with Swiss Suchard chocolate and topped with cream. Everyday thousands of people, including tourists, royalty and VIP's come here to enjoy this house specialities. Napfgasse 4, (01) 251 80 60
